BSN'S JACKASS OF THE WEEK!
When thinking about who would be my first Jackass of 2007 I had a
couple of candidates.  Rex Grossman for admitting he didn't really give a
100% effort in the Bears last game of the year because he was thinking
about New Year's Eve. Tony Romo for dropping the snap on what would
have been a game winning field goal for the Cowboys in the playoffs
over the Seahawks.  I thought about them and realized, "yeah, they're
candidates, but they aren't the Jackass of the week".  So, without further
delay, the first BSN Jackass of the Week for 2007 is none other than
coach Nick Saban.  C'mon, you knew that already.
As you all know by now, Saban walked away in the middle of a contract
with the Miami Dolphins to accept a deal with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
I want to set it straight that I don't have an actual problem with him taking
the job, but because of the way he handled the process, he's a Jackass.
Rumors about his possible departure began in November.  However, on
November 27, 2006 Saban said,
"When I was in college it was always
about coming to the pros. This is the challenge I wanted. I had a good
college job. Why would I have left that if I was going to be interested in
other college jobs?"
That's a great point Nick. He left the head coaching
job at LSU, where he won a BCS National Title in 2003 to take over the
Dolphins vacancy.  He went on to explain why he made the move,
"I took
this as a challenge. We certainly haven't seen this through and gotten
where we want to go and finished the job here, so why would I be
interested in something else?"
Ok, I get that. You achieved the ultimate
goal in college by winning the championship, you want a new challenge.
The Dolphins are 15-17 under your regime and haven't made the playoffs
yet, you still have work to do here. Great. See you in 2007 coach!  Ten
days later, the "rumors" were still floating and Saban was asked again
about the Alabama job on December 7, 2006.  He responded with this,
"I'm flattered that they may have been interested in me, but it never
really progressed, because we just never let it progress."
Fair enough,
Alabama still hadn't picked a coach and maybe they DID have interest in
Coach Saban, but he said no because he still has a goal to accomplish in
Miami.  Two weeks went by and nobody had been offered the job yet at
Alabama and again Saban's name was floating around as the next coach.
On December 21, 2006 Saban tried to clear the air with this,
"I guess I
have to say it. I'm not going to be the Alabama coach. ... I don't control
what people say. I don't control what people put on dot-com or anything
else. So I'm just telling you there's no significance, in my opinion, about
this, about me, about any interest that I have in anything other than
being the coach here."
Loud and clear coach, you are NOT leaving!  But
why are people still talking about you for the job?  Six days later on
December 27, 2006,
"I'm just making a rule to never comment on
something like that again because every time you comment on it, it just
makes for another story. So I'm not going to comment on it five years
from now, and I'm not going to comment on it next week."
Are you sure
coach, because on January 4, 2007, AFTER you ACCEPTED the Alabama
job you did indeed comment on it.  This time your tune was a little
different,
"What I realized in the last two years is that we love college
coaching because of the ability that it gives you to affect people, young
people. ... If I knew that my heart was someplace else in what I wanted to
do, I don't think it would be fair to the [Dolphins] organization if I stayed."
Ahh, so NOW the truth finally comes out, you LIAR!  The truth is, over the
only two years you coached the Miami Dolphins you realized you didn't
want to be there. You wish you hadn't left college, and you wanted to go
back. The prior FIVE weeks of comments were all LIES.  You're nothing
but a liar coach. ALL you had to say was you had no comment, you were
the current coach of the Dolphins and they were your focus. Yet, to come
out and flat out lie to the entire world about your real intentions make
you the easy winner of the BSN JACKASS OF THE WEEK!
