Beckham Coming To America Well Overpaid and Overplayed
The world's most recognizable soccer star is coming to America.  And he's got 250 million reasons
why.  David Beckham, the British soccer player who currently plays in Spain has agreed to a five
year 250 million dollar contract to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS.  Is it just me or is this
absolutely absurd?  How in the world did he land a contract like that in American soccer?  The
largest contract in American sports belongs to Alex Rodriguez who has a 10 year 252 million dollar
deal with the Yankees.  The Yankees, are one of, if not the most prominent team in all of sports.
They make millions upon millions of dollars per year and have
a very large following nationally.  In
comparison the LA Galaxy is a soccer club in America's least prominent professional league.  Are
they even WORTH 250 million?  This doesn't make any sense to me.  All week long Sportscenter,
Good Morning America and the local news hav
e been playing up the fact that Beckham is coming to
American. I'm trying to understand why and who cares?  I know the MLS has some sort of following
as it is still in existence, but does Beckham's arrival actually impact those of us who don't really
watch soccer?  I'm going to say no, it doesn't.  So there for, does his contract of five years and 250
million dollars actually make sense?  I don't see how it does.  The MLS may have a following, but it's
not a large one. If Beckham's arrival doesn't generate millions of fans per year, I don't see how this
move makes any sense at all for the league or for the team.  If anything, with a contract this large
for one player in such a small league, wouldn't it hinder the team from landing any other adequate
players?  From my understanding, the MLS does have a salary cap, and I can only assume that
Beckham just took a HUGE portion of the Galaxy's salary space for the next five years.  This move
may seem smart to LA and to the MLS but I don't think it's going to work out the way they think.
Beckham's arrival is not going to cause the stir in America that these soccer officials anticipate.
They will not generate the anticipated revenue they need to pay him or the rest of their team.  I
believe that most American's when hearing upon his arrival are either saying "who cares?", "who is
that?" or "Hey, Posh Spice's husband is playing soccer for some team in America".  David Beckham
may be the Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky and Babe Ruth of Soccer to the world, but here in
America he's just some dude in the MLS who is overpaid and with the media coverage his arrival is
getting, overplayed.
